sleeping with baby

By Pregnancy and Parent at 2010-03-29 02:03:28
Are you a parent or incoming parent who is looking for guidance in raising a baby? Have you considered or started the process of sleeping in the same bed with your infant? This is one of the dumbest ideas in existence. By reading this article, you will learn a variety of reasons why co-sleeping with your baby is not a wise idea.First Argument against Co-sleeping: This can lead to your baby's suffocation. There is a high risk that you will roll on top of your baby or squeeze it between your wife or husband while you are sleeping, possibly crushing the baby to death.

When you're averaging a few hours a sleep a night due to a crying baby, you may be tempted to put him or her in bed next to you. Better sleep for you and the baby right? Seems like an easy decision to make. However, visions of rolling over your little one may make the choice a bit more complicated. In the difficult decision to either co-sleep (sleep with your baby) or put baby in his or her crib, what is the right thing to do? With parents on both sides of the crib of this heated debate, one thing is for sure-there are no easy answers.

I thought I was done with the whole "where does your baby sleep" debate. I purchased a crib for my oldest, which I believe made a nice decoration for the nursery, although it was never used. From day one, she slept in bed with us. With my other two children, we never even bothered to get it out. And then, just six months ago, we decided that our family was as large as it was going to get and so we donated or sold every single piece of baby equipment and clothing that we had.

But that is ME. A lot of factors enter into this decision: How sound you sleep, whether you are overweight, what medications you take, the size of your bed your child's temperament, your feelings and your spouse's feelings on the issue, what to do with baby when you are feeling amorous, is the crib in the parents' room or not, the absence or presence of siblings, and so on.

Normal Sleep Pattern For Your Baby

During the first year of your baby's life it is quite understandable to wonder what a good sleep pattern is for your baby. Newborns are born without their day and night rhythm established and questions regarding sleep, the amount of sleep your baby needs and strategies or techniques to help your baby sleep often dominates a new parents thoughts. Newborns often require 16 hours out of 24 hours sleep however the pattern of sleep changes over the first 12 months of life.

There are a lot of debates on whether we should let our babies sleep with us. I have tried different sleeping arrangements for each of our children, from sleeping in the crib in our room, to letting her sleep in her own room; to sleeping with me in our bed. We found out (through the hard way) that it is very important that a baby should not sleep by himself, until at least about 2 years of age.
