natural sleep aids

Being able to fall asleep minutes after hitting the bed is something many can do, but there are others who toss and turn all night trying to achieve a good night of sleep. Having a hard time falling asleep can lead to an exhausting day and another sleepless night. Using a sleep aid to fall asleep at night is something many have to do, and sleep aids can be either natural or prescription.

The most common ingredients in natural sleep aids include Valerian and Lemon Balm, two plant derived ingredients that are gentle to your stomach and central nervous system. You can use them to help you relax, unwind and prepare your mind for sleep without waking up with the groggy, unfocused hangover that many people experience from prescription sleep aids, which often contain narcotics or other harsh drugs.

There are many insomnia remedies on the market, both natural and pharmaceutical. Pharmaceutical medications such as Ambien can cause side effects such as daytime drowsiness, diarrhea and even strange nocturnal activities like sleep-eating and driving whilst asleep. To add to the danger, pharmaceutical medications can become addictive and lose their effectiveness over a few weeks. A better choice would be to turn to high potency natural sleep aids that are affordable and safe.

1 Try and keep your room uncluttered with minimal distractions. Don't watch television or do your work in the bedroom. Instead, assign another room in your house for these specific activities.
2 If you have a clock that ticks or an alarm with a LED display that lights up, get rid of it. Get rid of as many electrical items as possible or switch them off completely.
3 If you have a thermostat, set it to a comfortable temperature that's conducive for sleep, and make sure you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes.
4 It's always best to sleep in a quiet, dark room, but sometimes this isn't easy to achieve. If light and noise are an issue, a quick and easy fix is to use earplugs and a sleeping mask.

This get's me to the whole point of this article. Natural sleep aids. Some natural aids may surprise you. An obvious natural sleep aid is a change in your diet. Eating too much sugar or fatty foods can prevent you from falling asleep quickly. Stimulants, such as caffeine, also forces your body to stay awake. Just staying away from caffeine and sugar as much as possible, can greatly improve your ability to sleep. Dark green vegetables, wheat products, almonds, cashews, yeast in brewed products, can all act as natural sleep aids. If you have insomnia, you can try to eat more of these foods then you previously have. A diet change may prove to be your personal natural sleep aid.

Melatonin is a hormone, but you can take it in capsule form. This is available at most convenience stores, and is much preferable to taking artificial sleep aids. Take melatonin 30 minutes before you plan to sleep, and you should feel drowsy. This is because melatonin is creating a sleeping potion effect. Some patients that suffer from insomnia do not have enough melatonin. They try to sleep every night, but they never feel sleepy. This is because their bodies do not produce any sleep potion, so they feel the same in bed as they do when fully awake.
