Weaning Baby

By Pregnancy and Parent at 2010-03-11 05:04:08
Baby led weaning (sometimes referred to as infant-led weaning) is becoming a popular approach to weaning babies on to solid food.In basic terms, it means forgetting about pureed food and letting your baby feed herself (appropriate) whole foods. It is arguably the natural way to introduce solids. Although it still remains a recommendation of many childcare professionals and institutions, there is actually no research to support the widespread notion that babies should be weaned first on to solids through pureed or mashed food.

Weaning Babies is still a popular asked question among parents, remember milk is still the major first food for all babies, Its important to remember when weaning a baby onto solid foods that milk is still the most natural and best food for growing babies. Today most midwifes encourage breast feeding, apart from the emotional benefits, breast milk contains antibodies that will help protect infants from infections. In the first few months they are particularly vulnerable and the colostrum a mother produces in the first few days of breast feeding is a very important source of antibodies which help to build up a baby's immune system. Even if its only for a week your child will benefit. It is also medically proven that breastfed babies are less likely to develop certain diseases in later life.

Weaning is an important event not only for the baby but for the mother, both from a physically and emotionally point of view. A mother who has given great importance of breast-feeding, may feel somewhat depressed and some days after interrupting breast feeding, as if the relation between her and the baby would be diminished or as if she is not important any more for the baby. The weaning of the baby can be sudden, gradual, partial or natural.

Mother dogs have tendencies not to wean their babies. Some mother dogs have strong maternal instincts and they will allow their puppies to nurse long after the 6 to 8 week period. Therefore, it is up to you the owner to step in and begin the process of weaning the baby off mother. Weaning the babies off the mother is not difficult. However, it does take some effort on your part.

Breastfeeding is highly encouraged as the main source of baby's nutrition from birth to at least 6 months of age. At this time, your baby needs nothing else but your breast milk - full of vitamins and nutrients that are of high quality as it helps your child fight off infections and other harmless-to-us-but-possibly-debilitating-to-a-child diseases.

Most babies are weaned at between 4 and 6 months. Current World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines recommend a full 6 months of breastfeeding before introducing solids, but many parents find that their babies are ready for a small amount of food before that time.

When introducing solids into a baby's diet you should do it gradually and make sure that the child is ready to up their meals and food intake. When a baby starts weaning you usually start with adding baby rice into their routine this could be along with a bottle of milk or in between feeds, this will be down to your babies routine and daily structure.
