Diaper Rash Treatment

By Pregnancy and Parent at 2010-02-08 05:23:24
There is nothing worse than a baby who has a severe case of diaper rash. Seeing your baby in pain and suffering is enough to break a mothers heart. This condition is very treatable and should be prevented at all times! What can you do to get rid of diaper rash or even stop diaper rash from happening?

As you may well know, a moist and wet environment is the perfect place for diaper rashes and yeast infections to develop. But what is the difference? Let's start by explaining the similarities between the two. Both will make a baby's bottom red and irritated. Both will cause discomfort to a baby--their crying is a good indication of this during changing times.

When you clean the baby, make sure the wipes you use do not include alcohol as an ingredient, as this will dry out the baby’s already sensitive areas. Instead, use a soft cloth or paper towel that is dampened slightly with water.

Keep wet or soiled diapers changed frequently.

Allow your baby to go without a diaper a couple of times a day, tummy time on a dry towel with a water proof mat underneath is a good time to do this and another good time is just after their bath, pat the area dry and allow him or her some air time without a diaper.

The diaper area of a baby will, unavoidably, come into contact with some bacteria on a regular basis. Even regular changes and cleaning can sometimes fail to pick it up. You will know when your baby has diaper rash, as it is characterized by skin in the diaper area appearing red and inflamed, and in some cases coming up in pimples. It will irritate the child and if left unchecked can develop into something worse, including a number of infections. As well as this, it will be obvious to any parent that the child is in quite some discomfort.

You can detect oral thrush by examining the mouth. The condition appears as a whitish, milk curd-like coating on the tongue and/or areas of the mouth. Although it may look like milk in the mouth, the patches cannot be easily washed away and they are often surrounded by red tissue. Additionally, a baby with oral thrush may experience difficulty sucking or eating.

Diaper Rash If you notice redness or pinkish red pimples in the diaper area, your infant has developed a diaper rash. You need to reach for over-the-counter zinc oxide cream like Desitin. Apply a thin layer to the diaper area 3-4 times daily, and then cover it with a thin layer of a barrier ointment. Continue to air out the area after each diaper change.

Use a natural diaper cream every time you put on a new diaper. The diaper cream will provide a barrier between the diaper and your baby's skin which will help prevent diapers rash. There are different types of creams and ointment that you can use, but always use a natural product to avoid harsh or synthetic chemicals. Diaper rash oils are great because they are sensitive and provide a lot of moisture.

Doctors may use topical steroids for the care of diaper rash. However, topical steroid therapy should be reserved for use where the rash has failed to respond to over the counter approaches, and antifungal treatment should only be employed where Candida infection is established or suspected. Parents should implement a simple skincare routine that could help keep babies' skin healthy.
