Baby Sleeping Tips

By Pregnancy and Parent at 2010-02-06 01:09:19
Sometimes getting a baby to sleep is not as easy as following a step-by-step program. In fact, there are times when all the advice of the experts doesn't even come close to solving your baby's sleep problems. When that happens - for your baby's sake and the sake of your own sanity - we suggest throwing out convention and doing whatever it takes to get your baby to sleep.

New born babies will not sleep through the night because they need to feed every few hours. In fact, if you are breast feeding your baby, expect to wake up every two hourly at least during the first few months and if you are using formula milk, it will be every 3 hours.

During the day when your baby is awake, keep him stimulated and engaged by playing with him, talking to him, or singing to him. Also open blinds or curtains and let plenty of light in. Let him hear all the normal sounds and activity going on in your home.

Keep a check on your baby's nap times during day and don't let him sleep for long periods. If he sleeps a lot of hours in the day he may not sleep well at night.

When your child is awake, interact, play, do what you normally do as long as it's during the day. If they start to drift off, or fall asleep, place them in their designated sleep area. This will help your newborn associate this special place as a time for sleeping.

Set up a bed time routine that is nice for baby and you. Sing a song ie. lullaby while bathing baby. Cuddle and read a book or listen to music designed to promote sleep. Check Amazon.com for titles. If baby is fussy, consider a gentle back rub. But don't let baby sleep on the stomach.

Shorten nap time during the day - If the baby sleeps too much during the day, then he or she may not be able to sleep as well at night. When napping, keep the lights on and try not to give the baby any cues that it is bed time by avoiding the night routine. No need to wake the child from napping, but if conditions are brighter and a bit noisier, then the baby will probably wake up on its own.

The first point is to develop rituals for your baby naps. They are aimed essentially to develop a regular napping time with your baby. This is important as will develop a foundational habit that will help you with your baby’s bed time activities.

Bedtime Routine- Babies are truly creatures of habit and learn from the routine and habits that we do daily. When it comes to sleeping problems and caring for your infant a routine is one way to prepare them for bedtime. A warm bath, dimmed lights, and nursing baby are great ways to signal to your baby that it is time for bed.

Noise is the other major factor affecting your baby’s environment. A barking dog, a new voice from the street, an insistent car stereo will make the difference and your baby won’t sleep.

Stick closely to a schedule. Have a certain time that you dress baby for the crib. A mother whose newborn had an erratic sleeping pattern shared with me that she stuck to a rigid routine for over a week and almost crumbled more than once. Then almost magically the baby began to respond and started to stick with an early bedtime.
